What Counts as a Sentence?

A sentence commonly ends with punctuation such as a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!).

For example:

Text: Today is Monday. Are you ready? Let's begin!

This text contains 3 sentences.

The counter also handles text that does not have punctuation at the very end by counting the remaining text as a final sentence.

Sentence Count with Abbreviations and Numbers

Not every period means that a sentence has ended. Periods can also appear inside abbreviations and decimal numbers.

For example:

Dr. Smith arrived at 3.30 p.m. He went home.

A basic counter that treats every period as a sentence ending could produce an inaccurate result. The Sentence Counter accounts for several common abbreviations and avoids treating decimal points between numbers as separate sentence endings.

Because natural language can contain unusual abbreviations and punctuation, automated sentence counting may not interpret every possible writing style perfectly.

Count Words and Characters Along with Sentences
