How Is Reading Time Calculated?

Reading time is estimated using the number of words in the text and the selected reading speed in words per minute (WPM).

The basic calculation is:

Reading time = Number of words ÷ Words per minute

For example, a 400-word article at an average reading speed of 200 WPM has an estimated reading time of:

400 ÷ 200 = 2 minutes

Because actual reading speed varies from person to person, the result should be treated as an estimate rather than an exact measurement.

Choose Your Reading Speed

The calculator provides three reading-speed options.

Slow — 150 WPM

Choose 150 words per minute when you want a slower reading estimate. This can also be useful when estimating time for text that may require more careful reading.

Average — 200 WPM

The default setting uses 200 words per minute. This provides a practical general estimate for ordinary text.

Fast — 250 WPM

Choose 250 words per minute to estimate the time for a faster reading pace.

Switching between these options lets you compare how reading speed affects the estimated time.

Here are some simple examples using the calculator’s 200 WPM average setting:

Word count tells you how many words are in a piece of text. Reading time estimates how long those words may take to read.

For example, knowing that an article contains 1,000 words is useful, but an estimated reading time of about 5 minutes at 200 WPM gives readers another way to understand its length.
