Free Online Tool
Natural Sort
Sort lines the way a human would, with numbers in numeric order.
Natural Sort
Natural Sort is a free online tool for sorting lines containing both text and numbers in a more natural order. Instead of placing file10 before file2, natural sorting recognizes the numbers and places file2 before file10.
Paste your list into the tool above and the lines are sorted instantly in your browser. It is useful for filenames, numbered items, product codes, labels, and other text containing a mixture of letters and numbers.
What Is Natural Sorting?
Natural sorting, sometimes called natural order sorting, treats numbers within text as numeric values instead of comparing everything only as text.
For example, a regular text sort may produce:
file1
file10
file11
file2
file20
Natural Sort produces:
file1
file2
file10
file11
file20
This creates the order most people naturally expect when reading numbered items.
How to Use Natural Sort
- Enter or paste your list into the input box.
- Put each item on a separate line.
- The tool automatically sorts the lines into natural order.
- Review the sorted result.
- Copy or download the result when finished.
Natural Sort Example
Suppose your original list contains:
file10
file2
file1
file20
file3
file11
Natural sorting changes it to:
file1
file2
file3
file10
file11
file20
This makes numbered lists easier to organize and read.
When Is Natural Sorting Useful?
Natural sorting is useful whenever numbers appear inside text. Common examples include filenames such as image1 and image10, numbered documents, product labels, chapter names, item identifiers, and similar lists.
It is especially helpful when a normal alphabetical sort places items such as item10 before item2.
Natural Sort vs Regular Text Sort
A regular alphabetical or lexicographic sort compares text character by character. Natural sorting recognizes numeric portions of the text, so numbers such as 2, 10, and 20 appear in the order people normally expect.
This makes natural sorting particularly useful for filenames and other numbered text.
